Passing the Professional Engineering Exam

Each year, thousands of young, aspiring civil engineers, sit down for one of the longest exams of their life.

Administered by NCEES (the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying®), the Professional Engineering exam is a grueling 8 hour, 80 question test designed to separate the wheat from the chaff. It requires the examinees to have a minimum of four years’ post-college work experience (three if they have their masters), have passed the FE, and attended an ABET accredited college or university.

They also must obtain references from five individuals (three of which must be registered engineers), submit college transcripts and pay over $100 in fees. The exam itself is so challenging that it’s open book, leading engineers to roll in with suitcases filled with literature in tow.  While passing rates vary by discipline, only 53-65% of first-time takers pass the exam, a number that plummets even lower for repeat testers.
